Mission
To provide the opportunity for golfers in the parish to play with fellow parishioners in a recreational but competitive format. The league�s main goals are sportsmanship, friendship, and the spirit of fair play.

Ministry Description
League coordinators form teams, schedule play, and setup the league�s spring kick-off meeting. The league maintains financial records and shares those with the parish office. We coordinate meetings with the parish office and ask the office to publish parish bulletin announcements about league activities.

The league expects and promotes conduct and good example consistent with our faith. League members are often available to assist the parish in ministry fairs, fundraisers, and to offer their time, talent, and treasure.

For the past three years, the Men's golf league has donated $500.00 to a family to send a child to St. Gregory the Great School. The gift is now made annually in memory of all deceased league members. The school makes the decision on which family receives the award.

LEAGUE HISTORY The St. Gregory the Great Men's Golf League was founded in 1970 by a small group of about eight to twelve parishioners who got together once a week to play golf. In 1971 Bill Henneman* moved to the parish from Chicago and set up the format currently in use today. The league chose Oakwood Golf Course in Amherst as it's venue and it still continues there today. In 1974 Dave Wadnoli, a member of the league, and the area Chevas Regal rep, donated the Chevas Regal trophy which is awarded to the winning team at the end of each year. The trophy was renamed the Bill Henneman Memorial Trophy after Bill's untimely death in 2002 to commemorate the many contributions he made to the league. Over the years the league has increased in size, going from the original 4-man size to the present size of 8 men per team. Since 1993 all teams have had 8 members with 7 playing each week. The league holds an annual outing at the end of each season. Past outings have been held at Willowbrook, Niagara County and Oak Run golf courses all in Lockport, N.Y. In 1999, the league moved the outing to Terry Hill's in GC in Batavia, N.Y. League members traditionally get together for dinner and prizes after golf each week. The Ship & Shore has been the primary venue over the years. However in the early '80's the Ship and Shore changed management, so the league began meeting at Smith's Tavern. It turned out to be temporary however, and the league returned to the Ship N Shore. In 2002, the league get-togethers moved to Sean Patrick's on Millersport Road, owned by the Lillis family, parishioners of St. Greg's. In 2003 the league started a new tradition: the donation of $500 to St. Gregory's school to be used as a scholarship for a needy family. The gift is now made annually in memory of all deceased league members.

Highlights from the 2007 Final night! St. Albert's Wins as Delagrange makes a key breaking downhill 7 footer on #9 to win it all for St. Alberts! Carrier and McGeein falter as St. Francis loses by 1 point for overall championship. Captain Al Marabella wins his third championship in a row setting a modern record that has stood since 1974. Don Lenda wins his 8th championship, a shoe in for the Hall of Fame and an ESPN special. Year highlights saw John Keilich tie the league and course record with a 5 under 30 to tie Paul Metzan's 30 shot in 2003. A record 10 eagles were made during the years and over 30 below par rounds were shot, including an astounding 14 sub par rounds by John Kielich! The Italian Stallions have united once again to make a run at the year end scramble on August 29th.
