Mission Statement The Parish Advocates for Persons with Disabilities (PAPD) is committed to promoting active and full participation and leadership of all people within the liturgical, educational, and social aspects of the parish community. Current goals include: - To make the liturgy accessible to all persons.
- To promote awareness and acceptance of all persons with disabilities.
- To determine the extent to which the Church may be modified to accommodate the hearing impaired.
- To promote assistance/special seating in church to mobility-impaired persons.
- To seek ways to promote awareness and understanding of various disabilities.
Ministry Description Parish Advocates for Persons with Disabilities (PAPD) is a new ministry begun in the summer of 2001. Our "pioneer" members have started by working with the Diocesan Advocates Coordinator, Rosemary Walter. We are excited about future possibilities for expanding our goals and objectives.
At this time, our focus is making the liturgy more user friendly to all, particularly for the hearing impaired and mobility impaired. We are also seeking a greater parish awareness and sensitivity to persons with disabilities. We have met on weekday evenings as needed. New members and ideas are most welcome!
HEAR HERE! An Assistive Listening System has been purchased for St. Gregory's Church.
WHY:
To help those with hearing difficulties hear better and fully participate in church services. Those who wear a hearing aid as well as those that do not, but who wish to improve hearing, will benefit from the system.
WHICH TO CHOOSE:
Those without a hearing aid should request a receiver with earbuds. Those who wear a hearing aid should request a receiver and loop.
PROCEDURE:
You may request the use of a receiver set from an usher as you enter church. Sign your name in the log book and return the set to an usher after mass.
WHEN:
Available beginning March 15, 2003.
Twenty receiver sets will be available for use at each weekend mass.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS:
- The earbuds (for persons with no hearing aid) or loop (for persons who wear a hearing aid) are connected to the receiver.
- The receiver is clipped to your pocket or belt.
- Turn on switch. That's it!
- Turn OFF switch when finished. Return to an usher.
The earbuds are covered with foam pads. You will receive a pair of pads the first week you use them. You may save them to use again, or you may purchase pads at Radio Shack, or another electronic store.
You may choose to bring your own earbuds (or earphones from a walkman) to use with the church's receiver.
If you would like to purchase your own receiver and loop ($151) or receiver and earbuds ($102), please contact the business office.
Happy Listening,
Advocates for Persons with Disabilities
